Measuring progress against targets is vital for any business. Companies track their sales figures, cost base, and carbon emissions — but what about their circular economy performance? We cannot create a circular economy until we can properly measure it. Find out how to get your company assessed, how to collect and submit the data, and what the result looks like.
The Circulytics indicator list explains which questions will be asked throughout the assessment, depending on the characteristics of your company. Use this list to:

The methodology behind Circulytics, including how scores are calculated, is explained in the Method introduction.
Circulytics is free of charge for any company to use. To become a Circulytics reporter for your company, apply for an account.
Once the application is approved, a welcome email with the Circulytics account details will be sent to you, typically within one working week. Please note, it is the responsibility of responding companies to coordinate internally to ensure a single appropriate response is provided by the company.
If the organisation operates similarly to a for-profit company, Circulytics can be applied. If not, we invite you to spread the word about Circulytics.
The welcome email which is sent to the company reporter contains a template for data collection, which can facilitate the gathering of data from multiple sources in the company, for example from colleagues in different business units.
The data gathering process typically takes between 2 weeks and 3 months, depending on company size and data availability.
Once the data has been gathered offline, it needs to be submitted to the Circulytics online survey by the company reporter. All data must be submitted via this online survey. Data received by email and in other formats cannot be processed.
The Circulytics online survey is available in English, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese. Please note: Supporting comments and reference documents must always be added in English to be interpreted by our team.
The survey submission (excluding the time for data gathering) typically takes around 24-32 hours.
The company reporter can find the login details for the online survey account in the welcome email with the subject line “Welcome to Circulytics | Login details and information”. The platform will save progress. The company reporter should ensure that all responses are reviewed prior to submission, by re-navigating through each section via the contents page. The platform will alert the reporter if responses to mandatory questions are missing. Once the response has been submitted, the company reporter will be able to review and download a summary of the response for internal records.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties with your submission, reach out to us at circulytics@emf.org
The Circulytics updates will be released in October each year. A new link with login details to access the updated version will be sent to the company reporter. Data will not be carried over from one year to the next.
It is recommended to complete Circulytics on an annual basis, which allows the tracking of progress against company targets. We will continue developing and improving Circulytics in an annual development cycle, together with companies in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Network.
Each year the deadline for completing the Circulytics survey is 31 August. Organisations cannot complete the survey after this deadline. The survey will be closed to submissions for September, whilst scheduled updates are implemented. Access to the updated version will be given to organisations after it is launched in October.
Circulytics is now open for submissions.
Upon completion of the Circulytics assessment, companies will receive a scorecard featuring an overall circular economy performance score, the score history, as well as a breakdown of their score by theme. The scorecard also includes a comparison within the industry benchmark – provided there are enough submissions within a specific industry to guarantee anonymity – alongside tailored insights and commentary from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation*.
* Analyst commentary is available for companies that are part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Network or have an annual revenue greater than USD 1 billion.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation will not publish individual company scores. The company can choose to disclose their scorecard with the conditions stipulated in the Terms of agreement after confirming with EMF the exact wording and format. The score will be anonymised and aggregated with other company scores to generate industry benchmarks and statistical insights.
