3 years fixed term contract
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with proven knowledge of key finance concepts and a keen interest in the circular economy to join our Finance Initiative team as a Senior Research Analyst.
To solve big problems like climate change, waste, and pollution, we need a big idea. It’s time to rethink how we design, make, and use the things we need, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a charity committed to building a circular economy, so we can create a better future for business, society and the natural world.
The circular economy offers a major opportunity for the financial sector to deliver on climate commitments and other environmental and social goals. It taps into sources of new and better growth and long-term value creation.
The Foundation’s Finance Initiative aims to scale finance for the circular economy by focusing on four mutually reinforcing activity areas:
promoting the concept of the circular economy within the finance sector,
ensuring the integration of the circular economy into leading disclosure and measurement initiatives to increase data transparency,
exploring innovative ideas to unlock finance for the circular economy transition, including the shift to regenerative agriculture at scale, and
working with close partners to support uptake and implementation of the circular economy by the finance sector.
Role and Responsibilities
You will be a key part of a small, highly motivated team, working across all of the activity areas to generate new insights and inspire the financial sector to seize circular economy opportunities and rapidly scale the transition. Your focus will be in the following areas:
Research and analysis
Gathering and analysing data, carrying out research and extracting insights to support and inform the strategic aims of the Finance Initiative, working with both internal and external stakeholders and partners.
Tracking financing activity within the circular economy over time.
Drawing out relevant insights and presenting them in a compelling format for a financial sector audience.
Developing briefings on the role of the circular economy in attaining climate and biodiversity objectives.
Exploring how financial sector mechanisms can support the regeneration of natural and agroecosystems.
Knowledge transfer and development of internal and external resources
Using insights to produce engaging content, assets, tools, case studies, and key messaging.
Drafting of position papers and/or briefings, working together with other Foundation programmes and external stakeholders (including financial institutions, investors, corporates, policymakers and NGOs), as well as drawing on existing Foundation knowledge/papers.
Supporting the development and facilitation of workshops and other events, if required.
A particular focus in the short term will be on reinforcing the link between circular economy and climate change with a view to catalysing the allocation of capital towards circular economy solutions.
Supporting mandatory disclosure initiatives
Engaging with experts across the Foundation (and externally) to draw on existing knowledge andinsights to draft and coordinate responses to consultations and requests for input on global mandatory reporting initiatives related to a circular economy. This will be in close collaboration with the Circulytics team (the Foundation’s company-level circular economy performance measurement tool) and the Systemic Initiatives teams (Plastics, Fashion, and Food).
Working with close partners
Supporting ongoing work and strategic projects with key financial sector partners in the Foundation’s network, including producing materials for co-promotion at events and development of thought leadership.
Development and Growth in the Role
This role has plenty of opportunities for growth and development. We are committed to supporting team members to develop skills through training and support. We expect this will be shaped by you and the needs of the team as we grow. This could include building project management capabilities, developing leadership skills, and/or representing the Ellen MacArthur Foundation externally in meetings and conferences.
A proven interest in circular economy, ESG, sustainability, climate change, nature, biodiversity, regenerative economics, systems thinking, or similar.
Proven knowledge of key finance concepts.
Evidence of interaction with senior stakeholders and proactive contribution to problem solving at workshops and meetings.
Strong planning and organisational skills with great attention to detail.

What we do
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation develops and promotes the idea of a circular economy. We work with, and inspire, business, academia, policymakers, and institutions to mobilise systems solutions at scale, globally. Our mission is to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
Our vision is a new economic system that delivers better outcomes for people and the environment. Business models, products, and materials are designed to increase use and reuse, replicating the balance of the natural world, where nothing becomes waste and everything has value. A circular economy, increasingly built on renewable energy and materials, is distributed, diverse, and inclusive.
