Design is at the heart of the circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. - everything around us is designed, from the food we eat to the chairs we sit on. Decisions made at the design phase influence how long something lasts, what it is made of, if it can be repaired, and what happens to it at the end of life. In fact, 80% of a product's environmental impact is influenced by decisions made at the design stage.
And, in the context of a circular economy, it means we have the power to redesign everything - in order to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature.
Design is for everyone and everything.
Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a designer, we all are, and you still have the power to make small changes and learn from the circular design approach. The Foundation's new circular design home provides an insight into the role design plays in the circular economy transition and how it can be applied. Designers can get started with signposted tools ranging from the circular design guide, to packaging workshops, and the fashion book — all in one place.
