Institution: Northwestern University
Location: Evanston, Illinois, United States, North America
Focus Area: Circular economyCircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. solutions through research, education, and institutional partnerships. Advancing circular economy solutions through transformational research, interdisciplinary education, and public engagement
Expertise: Sustainable materials, green chemistry, climate and carbon science, sustainable manufacturing, sustainable water systems and reusereuseThe repeated use of a product or component for its intended purpose without significant modification., green infrastructure, biomimicry, environmental remediation
Key Projects:
Institute for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern (ISEN) - The University-wide institute advancing global sustainability and energy solutions through transformational research, interdisciplinary education, and public engagement.
Program on Plastics, Ecosystems, and Public Health – Delivering scalable solutions addressing challenges related to the global use and accumulation of plastics, this interdisciplinary initiative brings together experts from across Northwestern as well as collaborators from academic, civic, NGO, and industrial partner institutions.
Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability (MSES) – A one-year, interdisciplinary degree program preparing students for public and private sector leadership roles in energy and sustainability. Students collaborate on the most pressing topics within technology, economics, and public policy with an elective course (ISEN 463) in Circular Economy.
Ubben Program for Climate and Carbon Science – Integrating science, engineering, business, policy, law, and communications from across Northwestern to study climate system dynamics and develop solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation.
sustainNU – Northwestern’s Office of Sustainability and University-wide program that aims to engage students, faculty, and staff in minimizing waste, increasing campus recycling/upcycling, and reducing—and eventually eliminating—Northwestern’s contribution to climate change.
The Center for Engineering Sustainability and Resilience (CESR) – Housed within Northwestern’s School of Engineering, CESR convenes diverse thinkers to accelerate the development of ideas, technologies, and people to attack the massive challenge of environmental degradation.
