The circular design for fashion book
It has been written in recognition of fashion’s huge potential to move towards a circular economy.
Taking place at Teatro La Scala, Milan, the Awards celebrate the formidable efforts of those creatives that are driving an industry that’s fit for the future, providing a perfect starting point for the Foundation’s Partnership with CNMI.
Divided into fourteen categories, the Awards acknowledge those setting ambitious targets and taking concrete action towards change, with a strong focus on sustainable and circular innovation.
For the 2022 edition, Dame Ellen MacArthur was appointed as chair of the Jury - overseeing the judging process and bringing a circular economy lense across all Award categories. In addition, the Foundation introduced a new Award - The Ellen MacArthur Foundation Award for Circular Economy - to celebrate those leading the way in applying the principles of a circular economy into their work.
Explore the stories and legacies of four circular design pioneers who’s brands were recognised at this year’s event - EILEEN FISHER, NKWO, Timberland and Vestiaire Collective. As contributors to the Foundation’s Circular Design for Fashion Book, their stories highlight how fashion can be redefined through circular design and the journey they’ve taken to get there.
This global event highlights creatives' outstanding contributions and formidable efforts to design a fashion industry that is better for people and the environment. It is no easy task, the fashion industry is on a journey and whilst there is a long way to go, the steps that are being taken demonstrate important momentum, and should be celebrated and showcased so that others are inspired to take action.
- Dame Ellen MacArthur
The Foundation’s Award for Circular Economy was introduced to celebrate the work of those fashion brands, suppliers, platforms and small-medium enterprises who are demonstrating the principles of a circular economy - to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature. Special consideration was given to organisations that combine circular economy principles and systems thinking at the core of their business.
In 2022, the Foundation was delighted to present this Award to Timberland for taking considerable strides towards integrating a circular economy with their Timberloop Trekker.
Not only considering product design – balancing both durability and recyclability – but also redesigning their global business model around take-back and resale to ensure their products are circulated and used more. Alongside these efforts to eliminate waste and circulate products, Timberland has also actively sought to regenerate nature, by investing in regenerative agriculture across their supply chain, advancing reforestation, and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
In addition to the Foundation’s involvement in the Sustainable Fashion Awards, with CNMI’s network and their aim to operate at the highest industrial, environmental, and social sustainability standards, it is hoped that the Partnership will forge a path through which our vision of a circular economy for the fashion industry can become mainstream.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. We develop and promote the idea of a circular economy, and work with business, academia, policymakers, and institutions to mobilise systems solutions at scale, globally.
