PS | 33 | 5,045 | - | Substitution to another plastic | Berry has been actively converting our PS products to PP for improved recyclability and reduced environmental impacts for several years. In 2020 alone, we eliminated just over 5,000 tons of PS by converting those products to PP – with most of the reduction coming from a substitution of PS Lids to PP. |
PVC | - | 580 | - | Substitution to another plastic | In FY 2020 we replaced 580 tons of PVC, with a PE based film. |
Other material | - | 20 | - | - | One of the greatest benefits of plastics is that they are lightweight, requiring fewer natural resources to produce. We continue to lightweight our plastic products further to reduce the overall environmental footprint of our products. In 2020, we eliminated almost 20,000 tons of plastic that currently does not fit the recycling guidelines ‘in practice and of scale’ through lightweighting, like our Wide Mouth closure redesign. For every 1 million new 70DS closures, we saved 7.275 lbs. of virgin. |
Multilayer materials | - | 145 | - | Substitution to mono-material plastic | IN FY 2020 we replaced 145MT of multilayer film with a mono-material alternative. |
Rigids B2C - household/personal products bottles | - | - | 4,850,000 | Substitution to mono-material plastic | As part of our commitment to the circular economy, in 2020 we converted over 4,850,000 units of unrecyclable composite cans into mono-material PP products, eliminating an unnecessary multi-material packaging format. |
Film B2B - e.g. pallet wrap | - | - | 24,000 | Reuse 'return' model | We implemented a core take back system which reduced the number of units by 24,000. |
Other component | - | - | 12,300,000 | Substitution to mono-material plastic | In 2020 we replaced over 12 million units of unrecyclable multi-material mechanisms for lip care sticks with mono PP to improve design for recycling. |
