Berry has taken numerous steps to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging. The most impactful action was undoubtedly our efforts surrounding lightweighting. One of the key benefits of plastics is that they are lighter weight and therefore use fewer natural resources compared to alternatives. Over time, we have been able to continue to lightweight our products further, making them even more resource efficient. In 2020, we were able to remove over 30,000 Metric Tons of plastic from our products across all product lines. Beyond lightweighting, we have also been active in converting PS packaging - which is not considered recyclable - to PP which we consider to be widely recyclable. Through these conversions, we have reduced our PS use in 2020 by a further 33%. We have also continued to work to convert unrecyclable multi-material packaging into mono-material packaging that is designed for recycling; converting almost 5 million units of composite cans into mono-PP in 2020.

We continue to work to eliminate the use of PS in our portfolio through substitution to PP solutions. By doing this, we reduced our PS by 33% in 2020, and are on track to achieve our target of eliminating our use of PS by 2025. We are also working to substitute non-recyclable product lines for products designed for recycling where possible, and continue to eliminate unnecessary use of plastic through the continual lightweighting of our products.

Since the reporting period we have 75 more reusable product lines either in place or in the pipeline, and we are eager to partner with customers on new reusable packaging applications and models.

Berry is a leader in design for recycling. During the reporting period, we continued to convert packaging from PS to more widely recyclable PP. We also continued taking steps to eliminate problematic design features, such as the use of colorants based on carbon black, and instead working to find NIR detectable solutions. We have also worked extensively on substrate simplification; in particular on our flexible packaging to simplify the structures to be compatible with the PE film recycling stream.

As a packaging manufacturer, we believe our most important roles are to design our products to be recyclable, and design our products with recycled content, thus creating demand for our products after use and contributing to circularity. Additionally, we ourselves have capacity to recycle over 135,000 metric tons ourselves. We have forged numerous partnerships to drive increases in plastic packaging recycling rates. Beyond our efforts at EMF, and the PP Recycling Coalition, Berry is also an active participant in organizations attempting to drive a circular economy for plastics, including the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, Circular Plastics Alliance, PCEP, CEFLEX, and many more. Berry is a currently a leader in design for recycling, and in order to achieve our 2025 commitment we will continue to convert our main unrecyclable packaging material, PS, to more widely recyclable materials. Alongside this, we will continue to eliminate any remaining problematic design features, of which the major in our portfolio. Substrate simplification; in particular on our flexible packaging will be targeted to achieve our goals.

We have forged numerous partnerships to drive increases in plastic packaging recycling rates, and will continue to be an active participant with organizations attempting to drive a circular economy for plastics, including the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, Circular Plastics Alliance, PCEP, CEFLEX, and many more. We will also continue to work to create a circular economy for plastics including PP. We currently expanding our own recycling capabilities through a new location in the UK that will focus on recovering plastic waste for FDA-approved materials, and this will be significant in increasing recycling rates with these materials as we look towards our 2025 goals. During the reporting period we increased our use of PCR by 0.1% to 2.3% in 2020 by working with customers to design product solutions containing increased levels of PCR. We also worked with our suppliers to enable us to source increased amounts of PCR for our products during the reporting period and for the future. In May 2020, we announced a project with Mondelez to supply them packaging made from recycled plastic recovered using advanced recycling from our partnership with Sabic (https://bit.ly/3kERLdx), and in December we announced an agreement with Repsol for them to supply us with ISCC plus certified polyolefins obtained through advanced recycling (https://bit.ly/3zmUCMD)

We plan to continue our current efforts to develop additional products with PCR as well as additional sources of PCR that are more suitable for our applications. We see advanced recycling technologies playing a critical role in this given its ability to make virgin-quality recycled content. This is critical for many PP and PE applications to transition to a circular economy for plastics. Following on from our announcements in 9.1, in April we announced a collaboration with Borealis for the supply of circular polyolefins made from chemical recycling (https://bit.ly/3eDzN7r), which means we will have access to over 600 million pounds of post-consumer recycled content by 2025 to enable us to support our customers by providing them with circular products.

In Evansville we have partnered with a local MRF to implement robotic sortation, which enables the sorting of PP containers. In the UK we are expanding our rigid recycling capacity through the development of a new facility that will use the latest technology in recycling with the ambition to produce FDA-approved material (https://bit.ly/3kCCCtm). At one of our sites in Texas we have partnered with Georgia Pacific to enable the recycling of Stretch wrap that we produce (https://bit.ly/3izbKYN).

In calculating our designed for recycling percentage, we used the guidelines outlined by APR and RecyClass for the appropriate regions. For RecyClass we only considered packaging that scored a rating of A-C as designed for recycling. We consider a majority of our PP containers to be designed for recycling and are concerned the EMF categorization of PP containers as non-recyclable does not recognize the progress made in recycling this material and may limit future investment in PP recycling.
