In 2020 we have prepared the launch of our new cardboard spoon. Folded just once, the sturdy spoon has a length of 10 cm. It is made from virgin fibres and is therefore approved for contact with food. Once used, the folding cardboard spoon can be simply disposed of with other wastepaper. A water-based coating selected for the spoon makes it ideal for recycling in the standard paper recycling stream. In addition, we actively and successfully started to phase-out the use of carbon black masterbatches.

Packaging using carbon black masterbatches poses a challenge for the recycling value chain on account of the color used in them, as they cannot be properly identified and sorted by the optical sensors at waste sorting facilities. Therefore, by 2025 we aim to eliminate the use of carbon black masterbatches completely. In 2019 we used carbon-free black masterbatches for the first time and we aim to extend the use of such masterbatches Moreover, we will completely phase out the production of single use plastics cutlery in 2021. With the cardboard spoon we developed in 2020 we have found a perfectly recyclable alternative to plastic cutlery which will prove successful on the market.

We plan to launch reuse models for 5% of our product portfolio revenue by 2025, aiming to save approximately 5% of packaging per year as of 2025.

In 2020 we implemented an internal Design for Recycling guideline which lists a number of rules we follow to make our packaging as easy to recycle as possible. Some basic guidelines include:

-use as little material as possible -use materials with existing recycling streams

-reduce area of packaging covered by decoration (< 50 percent)

-develop packaging that consists of just a single material (monomaterial) or combine materials that are easy to separate in recycling process

-dye materials as little as possible and only use colors that are free of carbon particles

-only use printing inks that comply with EuPIA guidelines

We are in close exchange with our customers, actively informing and promoting sustainable packaging solutions. In the future, we will lay an even bigger focus on educating our customers about sustainable packaging and encouraging them to evaluate their existing packaging by criteria of recyclability. Moreover, we will focus on:

-Introduction of monomaterial solutions (e.g. PO-sleeves)

-Introduction of new separation methods to separate plastic from cardboard – in case of packaging combinations

-Implementation of digital watermarks

Collaborative projects across the value chain. Increase recycling content within the product portfolio to leverage the growth of recycling industry.

In 2020 we continued our way in further incorporating recycling content. We are constantly deepening our knowledge on processing existing recycling materials (e.g. production of r-PS duo-cups) and developing recycling streams for our needs. We proactively encouraged our customers to use post-consumer recycling materials into their products. We, very successfully, introduced detergent packaging with an innovative two-layer concept, featuring 50% post-consumer r-PP to the market. Also, we started to invest in a new PET decontamination and extrusion line at Greiner Packaging UK which will enable the use of more recycled material in the future. In 2020 we started developing the first (r-)PET HTS® cups (hot temperature sterilization). This kind of packaging will present a great opportunity for offering dairy packaging with recycled content. We created the first bouillon packaging made from chemically recycled material.

CE has become an element of our company culture and is deeply implemented in our corporate values as well as all our processes, such as innovation and sales processes.

GPI invested into knowledge, fixed assets, capabilities, and inventory. These investments cover the participation at consortia projects, the gain of external knowledge from third party consultancies, the conduction of material tests and sampling projects, as well as the purchase of assets and tools. Moreover, investments to support the work of the circular economy department were made in order to advance a realization of a circular economy.

PP rigids are highly suitable for recycling and used for many applications. The collection and recycling infrastructures concerning PP are highly heterogenic across Europe compared to e.g. PET beverage bottles. We are concerned that the methodology "in practice and at scale" does not consider enough these specifics. The overall result of a portfolio mainly based on PP, is vastly affected by this methodology. We are aiming for and working on an actualisation of the data sources provided.

We are following the quantitative methodology of cyclos-HTP.
