Plastic and/or virgin plastic packaging reduction target
2025 target
30% virgin reduction compared to 2017
Plastic packaging weight baseline
34,500 metric tonnes - same scope as the reporting scope (see endnotes for more information)
Additional information about the target
The virgin plastic use reduction target will be achieved through a combination of measures including reduction and elimination of plastic material, replacement of plastic material by environmentally advantaged alternatives, such as paper, increased use of recycled content and the adoption of reuse models for the company‚ where relevant.

Activities and progress made on elimination
McCormick is on track to eliminate remaining problematic plastic materials by 2025. Eliminated BPA and PVC used in neck bands in North America. Conducted several trials on Multilayered alternatives for Street Foods, McCormick and P/l brands. Replaced multi-layer plastic with recyclable paper in France. Established business proposal to join Australia’s Redcycle program in 2021 to help avoid multi-layered structures going to landfill and being diverted to being repurposed into bitumen roads to extend shelf life and outdoor furniture. Up to 50Mton will be diverted in 2021 and beyond. BPA elimination on Keens Tins for 2020 was completed.

Scope of reporting
Excluded from the McCormick submission is packaging from our Business to Business, commercial division. These packaging components are industrial, bulk sized containers of which none of the materials are part of the consumer use stream. Our business development partners use industrial recycled best practices for these trade specified packaging materials.
