The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has contributed to the new film, A Fresh Take on Food Waste, produced by RE:TV. The film explores how innovative circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. solutions are keeping food in the system and out of landfill.
The current food industry is one of the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss and accounts for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. But, what if we could redesign food to regenerate nature instead of harming it?
In 2023, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in partnership with the Sustainable Food Trust, launched the Big Food Redesign Challenge to catalyse and inspire the food industry – from producers and retailers to startups and suppliers – to design or redesign food products to regenerate nature.
In the film, Reniera O’Donnell, the Foundation’s Consumer Products Executive Lead, explains how we can build a better food system through projects like the Challenge. She’s joined by Ben Thomas from Waitrose & Partners, a retailer participating in the Challenge, who explores how retailers can address waste in the food supply chain.
The film showcases real-world examples of circular solutions in action, demonstrating that tackling food waste is just one part of a much bigger opportunity to transform our food system.
