Introduction
Welcome to an engaging Built Environment Series hosted by Circular Buildings Coalition partners Arup, Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Metabolic together with SYENSQO.
This all-day event features four expert-led sessions, each focusing on different aspects of how circular economy principles can ensure the built environment remains within planetary boundaries - exploring regenerative design, business cases, circular scenarios and blueprints for solutions.
We’re very excited to be hosting this session at Solvay Library, a long-established sociology institute where scientists from around the world came together to share their thoughts and ideas.
This event is an accelerator session at the World Circular Economy Forum 2024 (www.wcef2024.com).
When: 17 April 2024 | 09:00 - 18:30
Where: Solvay Library, Leopoldpark, Rue Belliard 137A, 1040 Bruxelles, Belgium
The four expert sessions
Dive into our sessions and explore the detailed agenda.
Sessions:
Session 1: A more resilient future: moving beyond Net Zero towards Regenerative Design
Time: 09:10 - 10:30
Organiser: Arup
How can the built environment move towards a more resilient and sustainable future? Convened by Arup, leading built environment specialists will explore how regenerative design can help on our collective journey to net zero by embracing a new design practice focused on nature, the circular economy and greater collaboration and inclusivity.
Session 2: The business case for building circular: real-world examples unveiled
Time: 10:30 - 12:00
Organiser: Arup and Ellen MacArthur Foundation
Join the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Arup and others for a pragmatic discussion that bridges theory and practice when it comes to adopting circular economy principles in the built environment.
Session 3: Four pathways towards a circular built environment and blueprints to get there
Time: 12:45 - 15:15
Organiser: Circular Buildings Coalition
The Circular Buildings Coalition (CBC), a collaboration between Metabolic, WorldGBC, WBCSD, Circle Economy Foundation, Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, will show how circular interventions, including using secondary materials and making better use of our existing resources, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% by 2050. Frontrunners will also present their Blueprint Projects on secondary materials trading (CircoTrade), Materials-as-a-Service (Circular Value Institute), Products-as-a-Service (BASE), Building Passports (UCL Consultants), and insurance of secondary materials (Concular).
Session 4: Quantifying the economic potential of a nature-positive and circular built environment
Time: 15:30 - 17:00
Organiser: Ellen MacArthur Foundation
Ellen MacArthur Foundation Report Launch - Building Prosperity: With an ambition to restate the economic rationale of the circular economy to activate key players in the system, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, SYSTEMIQ and Arup have modelled the six most impactful circular economy levers for a nature-positive built environment. Join experts from the study and key stakeholders from the Business and Policy communities connected to the Built Environment to dive deep into six circular economy levers demonstrating the potential to deliver nature-positive impact and unlock up to 1 trillion EUR in benefits for Europe.
Full-day:
This unique event is a must-attend for anyone involved in the built environment sector, from architects and builders to policymakers and sustainability advocates, offering valuable insights, innovative solutions, and networking opportunities to advance the transition towards a more sustainable and circular built environment.
