The South African Plastics Pact is a first for Africa. The Pact’s development was led by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-SA) with the support of the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation (SAPRO) and WRAP, alongside national government support from the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF).
Following the launch in January 2020, Green Cape will lead the South African Plastics Pact, and during this time, will begin developing the 2025 roadmap towards concerted action among its members.
The South African Plastics Pact members committed towards the following 2025 targets:
Taking action on problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (re-use) delivery models
Ensuring that 100% of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable
Effectively recycling 70% of plastic packaging
Maintaining a 30% average on recycled content across all plastic packagin
