We welcomed guests including Wouter van Tol, from DS Smith, and Hege Sæbjørnsen, from IKEA, to the Foundation’s Circular EconomyCircular EconomyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. Cafe, to speak about the importance of design in the transition to a circular economy. Held at the New York Times Climate Hub, alongside COP26, the cafe served as a demonstration space to showcase circular economy solutions in action — including circular food and drinks for people to sample.
Wouter van Tol spoke about DS Smith’s circular design principles, developed with support from the Foundation, while Hege Sæbjørnsen explained that companies like IKEA could inspire optimism by demonstrating circular design solutions.
The Foundation’s Eliot Beeby spoke about redesigning our food system and demonstrated what this could look like — presenting potential food products such as a ‘climate crunch’ breakfast cereal, made with regeneratively farmed ingredients.
