Accelerating circularity as a holistic response to the triple planetary crisis: the economic case
Faced with food and energy crises that threaten to derail progress towards sustainable...
The UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) takes place each year, bringing together global leaders to drive climate action. The most recent COP, COP27, took place in Egypt from 6th to 18th November 2022. The Foundation participated in a number of events, taking this opportunity to demonstrate that the transition to a circular economy is an absolutely vital part of what is needed to tackle climate change and other global challenges, including biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution.
The transition to renewable energyrenewable energyEnergy derived from resources that are not depleted on timescales relevant to the economy, i.e. not geological timescales. is critical, but it’s only half the story. 45% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the way we make and use products and food. That means we need to redesign our economy — by eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating nature — to reduce emissions and meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement. We need a circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. to complete the picture.
