The UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) takes place annually, bringing together global leaders to drive forward climate action. This year’s COP, COP28, took place in Dubai from 30th November to 12th December 2023.
The Foundation participated in a number of events, taking the opportunity to demonstrate that the transition away from a linear economylinear economyAn economy in which finite resources are extracted to make products that are used - generally not to their full potential - and then thrown away ('take-make-waste'). and to a circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. is a vital part of what is needed to tackle climate change and other global challenges, including biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution.
Eliminate. Circulate. Regenerate.
The transition to renewable energyrenewable energyEnergy derived from resources that are not depleted on timescales relevant to the economy, i.e. not geological timescales. is critical and can help tackle 55% of emissions, but alone it is not enough. 45% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the way we make and use products and food. We need a new model for how we produce and consume the things we need. That means we need to redesign our economy — by eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating nature — to build economic opportunities and resilience, reduce emissions, and meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement. We need a circular economy to complete the picture.
